BC Moderate Water Kayak Coach Training

Course Outline

This Course of for you if you’re looking to coach white water kayaking on moderate water. This Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline.

The Coach Award content is delivered through the Core Coach Training and the Discipline Specific Training.

The syllabus is based on the knowledge, understanding and skills that the coaches need to ensure the athletes/learners in their care are appropriately provided for. This includes:

  • Assessing athlete/learner performance and needs
  • Designing and delivering progressive practice/training sessions to meet these needs
  • Managing safety
  • Creating an enjoyable motivating learning environment
  • Skills to support your own personal learning and professional development

Following assessment BC Moderate Water Coaches must have in place civil liability insurance (included in comprehensive Home Nation/British Canoeing membership, knowledge of Child Protection guidelines and good practice including checks where necessary and maintain evidence of currency.


To be able to get the most out of your training, we would recommend that you can paddle to the standard of the 3 Star White Water Kayak or new white water kayak award as a minumum.

  • Core Coach Training (or equivalent, see Coach Award Course Guide)
  • White Water Kayak Leader Assessed
  • Full Home Nation (British Canoeing) Association Membership

You will also need a base level of knowledge about the kayaking skills you wish to coach; this provides the content of WHAT you will be coaching. Whilst the British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor eLearning covers the expected prior knowledge of the HOW to coach content. We can provide further guidance for you.
