During the course, you’ll cover a range of topics, including:

  • Personal paddling techniques: You’ll learn efficient paddling techniques that will help you cover more distance with less effort. You’ll also learn how to turn your kayak quickly and efficiently in different conditions. You’ll develop your boat handling skills and learn how to navigate through more challenging conditions, such as wind, waves, and currents.
  • Navigation and planning: You’ll learn how to plan and navigate routes using charts, maps, and GPS, and how to interpret weather forecasts, tides, and currents to make safe and informed decisions.
  • Safety and rescue techniques: You’ll learn how to manage risks and how to perform rescues in different scenarios, including self-rescue, assisted rescues, and group rescues.
  • Leadership and group management: You’ll learn how to lead a group of paddlers in moderate conditions, including group dynamics, communication, and decision-making.

The course is delivered over 2 practical days. You’ll have the chance to practice your skills in a variety of conditions, including calm water, wind, waves, and currents. You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the stunning coastline of Devon and experience some of the most beautiful and secluded locations in the UK.

At the end of the course, our coaches will provide you with feedback to help you on your journey towards your British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Assessment, where you’ll be assessed on your skills and knowledge. Once you pass, you’ll receive your certification, which will enable you to lead groups of paddlers in moderate conditions.

The British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Assessment is designed to evaluate your ability to lead groups of paddlers on coastal journeys, using effective navigation and safety techniques. Our experienced assessors will evaluate your leadership skillspaddling proficiencyrescue techniques, and overall knowledge of sea kayaking.

Official training is not mandatory for this assessment however we would expect each candidate to have taken suitable actions on their journey to assessment to meet the requirements of the assessment. We would recommend the experience of a minimum of 20 journeys of at least 3 hours each, in a variety of moderate sea environments not exceeding force 4 winds. You should also hold a valid first aid certificate, have valid safeguarding training, completed the BC Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course, and hold an on-the-water British Canoeing Membership.

The assessment takes place over one day and includes a range of practical, on-water assessments. You will be evaluated on your ability to lead groups on journeys in moderate sea conditions, your proficiency in navigating effectively, and your knowledge of safety and rescue techniques.

Upon successful completion of the assessment, you will receive the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Award. This award is internationally recognized and highly respected, and will enable you to lead groups of paddlers on sea kayaking expeditions in a safe and effective manner. Registration is a process for leaders who are planning to attend a Leadership Assessment course. The purpose of Registration is to confirm you hold all prerequisites, it’s quick and confirmation is sent straight to your inbox*. This should then be shared with the assessor to confirm eligibility for assessment. It also gives you peace of mind that you have everything you need in place and you can focus on enjoying your assessment. Please do not try to Register unless you hold all prerequisites:

  • Safeguarding Training (dated within the last 3 years).
  • First Aid (dated within the last 3 years and appropriate to this award)
  • Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning
  • Full National Association Membership
