What Is the Paddle Sport Touring Leader?

The Paddle Sport Touring Leader will allow you to lead trips and journeys on moderate inland waters for a range of mixed craft! You can work independently or be deployed by an organisation to do these trips.

The new award has an optional training course which is available through Rock The Boat Activities. This is designed to support you in your development in leadership and group skills, personal skills, rescue skills and theory all in the moderate inland environment. We will work with you to identify clear action points to support your progress towards a successful assessment.  This training course can vary between 2 – 5 days,  the longer course giving you more time to practice and develop your skills. 

 

To become a paddle sport touring leader you will need to attend an assessment. The assessment takes place over a typical paddling day, depending on the logistics relating to accessing the suitable environments you and your assessor might agree on a longer assessment. The assessment  will involve you displaying all the appropriate personal skills, leadership and group skills, rescue skills  as well as underpinning background knowledge. 

We will help guide you through the prior planning for the assessment, discussing logistics with you and ensuring their are participants to lead on the day.  We believe in a relaxed, enjoyable stress free assessment, with you at the heart of the process!

Prerequisite

You will need these:

  • Safeguarding Training (dated within last 3years).
  • First Aid (dated within last 3 years and appropriate to this award)
  • Full National Association Membership
  • You need to be at least 16 years of age to register

To become a Paddlesport Touring leader there is no requirement to have a formal personal performance award or safety award  however you need to be able to independently paddle on open water, rivers up to and including short stretches of Grade 2.

Freestyle Coach

If you’re looking to coach Freestyle, this two-day training focuses on how to coach the technical and tactical skills for Freestyle paddlers. The course will help you plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and you’ll explore the specifics to help you coach some typical learners and athletes relevant to you and Freestyle.

This Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline-specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline. The course will cover the content delivered in your core training but out in the discipline-specific environment.

This course will have elements of classroom contact with 80% of the course being water-based.

The syllabus is based on the knowledge, understanding and skills that the coaches need to ensure the athletes/learners in their care are appropriately provided for. This includes:

  • assessing athlete/learner performance and needs
  • designing and delivering progressive practise/training sessions to meet these needs
  • managing safety
  • creating an enjoyable motivating learning environment
  • skills to support your own personal learning and professional development

Course Layout

Day 1: You, your peers and the provider will be out playing with ideas and theories while getting to grips with the environments in the eyes of a freestyle coach. This day is all about giving it all a go.

Day 2: We will have real students arrive for you to give it all a go! A great way to try new ideas and concepts with the ongoing development of a training course happening.

  • National Association membership
  • British Canoeing Core Coach Training
  • 17 years or older

Recommended Equipment

  • Freestyle Craft (If water-based)
  • Personal Paddling Equipment
  • Any safety equipment you would carry on the water
  • Lunch and water
  • note pad and pen

To become a Freestyle Coach, you will need to successfully complete a one day, mainly practical assessment. This will include assessment of your practical coaching and safety and rescue skills; supplemented with professional discussion and questioning.

Evidence of minimum standards of deployment:

  • Valid 2 day First Aid Training
  • Safeguarding Training
  • Full Home Nation Association Membership

White Water Kayak Coach

If you’re looking to coach white water kayak on moderate water, this two day training focuses on how to coach the technical and tactical skills for white water kayakers. This practical based course will help you plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and you’ll explore the specifics to help you coach some typical learners relevant to you and the white water environment.

This Discipline Specific Training is a mostly practical two day course. The training is designed for those working towards a Coach Award and is also suitable as stand-alone training. Please note, for the Open Water Canoe, Sea Kayak, Surf Kayak, White Water Canoe, White Water Kayak options, you will need to complete the relevant Leadership Award ahead of the Discipline Specific training. 

The Independent and Supplementary Learning includes completion of the Coach Award eLearning, which can be accessed by completing a CR Form. Alongside face-to-face training, coaches need to learn and develop their craft out in the field. We consider this to be a critical element to support coach development and we aim to provide some guidance to help you steer your way through this. During your development period (and in preparation for assessment) it is important that you engage in activities that help you:

  • practice and refine the application of theory to practice
  • develop as an effective learner
  • develop the depth and breadth of your discipline-specific experience and knowledge
  • develop your understanding, depth and breadth of supporting knowledge
  • develop your personal coaching philosophy

River Skills – Canoe

Come and join our introduction to river skills if you want to introduce your flat water canoe skills and develop them in a natural river environment. We will tailor the course to help achieve your personal goals and develop your skills in the following areas:

  • Canoe set up

The course can be held at different locations all over the UK.

Progressive White Water Award

Your Progressive White Water Award endorses your judgement, decision making and expertise and requires a good understanding of paddling on grade 3-4 rivers. You should be confident planning and undertaking journeys on a variety of white water rivers. Your confidence should be based upon both proficiency in skills and a broad appreciation of surroundings and environmental context. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for independently building the experience and expertise associated with Advanced White Water Award holders.

Other information

Although not prerequisites, these awards provide appropriate acknowledgement of personal skills for paddlers wanting to attend Coaching & Leadership qualifications. Achieving these awards ahead of the relevant qualification will enable you to focus on the course content, rather than being concerned with your personal skills.

This award is designed to advance your white water skills and your ability to make appropriate decisions for safe days out white water paddling on rivers of grade 4-5. Sandstone Classic Climbs

Who is it for?

Being based in the South East of England can mean that we spend a lot of our time climbing at indoor gyms, which is perfect for training, but what are we really training for?

To get outside of course!

We are lucky enough to have some of the best Sandstone crags in the UK just around the corner. We have Harrisons Rocks, Stone Farm and High Rocks, to name just a few, all in Surrey and Sussex. Our aim is to give everyone the opportunity to experience our incredible local crags safely and to grow the outdoor climbing community.

What this course is all about

  • This course will be bespokely designed around your ability level and climbing experience.
  • Specific crags and routes can be identified and used to tailor our session plans around your development.
  • We will use our knowledge and experience to guide you through some of the most renowned sandstone climbs in the South East.
  • We can work closely and coach your climbing skills and techniques.

What you need to bring

  • A sensible pair of closed toe trainers, which need to be firmly attached to your feet, either by laces or velcro. If you have your own climbing shoes that would be ideal
  • Something to drink
  • Packed lunch/snacks – it’s hungry work!
  • Weather appropriate clothes:
      1. If it’s sunny, please bring sun cream as we will be outside all day. Also bring a top that covers your shoulders
      2. If it’s cold, please bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket as we will be exposed to the weather for the day

We will be providing all climbing equipment/PPE including; harnesses, helmets, ropes, belay devices, anchors etc., so you do not need to any specialist equipment.

If you have your own equipment please feel free to bring it with you. All personal equipment will be inspected by our instructors prior to the course and we reserve the right to refuse it’s use if we deem it to be unsafe/not fit for purpose.

Minimum age is 8 – If there is a member of your group who is under this age, please send us a message via our enquiry page as we may be able to make exceptions.

Course Variations

This can either be a 1 or 2 day course. We can travel to various different crags depending on what you’re looking for.

Our prices start from £70 per person / day (based on 1:4) and £165 for one-to-one coaching.

Devon Classic Climbs

Who is it for?

Climbers have become a little bit of an indoor breed in recent years and our goal is to bring us back outside to enjoy some great rock faces in the South West.

There are incredible climbing crags located all across Devon so whether we’re down on the South coast, in the middle of Dartmoor or based on the North coast, we’ll never be short of great routes.

What this course is all about

  • We will cover all the essential skills required to keep you safe as you progress with your climbing
  • This course will be bespokely designed around your ability level and climbing experience.
  • Specific crags and routes can be identified and used to tailor our session plans around your development.
  • We will use our knowledge and experience to guide you through some interesting climbs that will challenge your skills and endurance.
  • We can work closely and coach your climbing skills and techniques.

What you need to bring
