Introduction To White Water Safety

The Introduction to White Water Safety course is designed to support paddlers to become effective group members on grade 2 water. This one day course is suitable for anyone starting out on their white water paddling journey, wanting to explore the role of an effective group member and learn simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues. Topics covered include Clothing and equipment, the White Water environment, preparing for the river trip, Swimming techniques and many more. Paddlers will rescue from their preferred craft, which can include kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards.

The Program

The Introduction to White Water Safety is a 6-hour programme that consists of 9 modules. This can be delivered in a day or as a series of modules and is available to all ages.

Motivations and decisions:

Clothing and equipment:

    • Craft overview, safety considerations, and features
    • Clothing and equipment worn

The White Water environment:

Prerequisites

Participants need to either hold the relevant British Canoeing Awarding Body Personal Performance Award or equivalent ability in/on their preferred craft due to the paddling environment and the boat/board control required to complete the course.

Recommended Equipment to bring

The following is a list of recommended equipment, if you do not have specific equipment please do not go out and buy, this course is a great chance to learn about equipment and try it out before purchasing your own:

  • Mobile phone in a waterproof case (fully charged)

Intro to Flat Water

This school will give you all you need to know for starting out. From correctly fitting safety equipment, choosing the right size and how to set up your kayak, to safely getting on the water.

Once you’re on the water one of our experienced coaches will run through the essential techniques to get you manoeuvring your craft with ease and fluidity.

Prerequisites

This school is for beginners wanting to learn how to kayak!

Intro to White Water

Looking for an introduction to whitewater kayaking? Interested in taking your flat water or whitewater centre paddling skills to the real rivers? During this school we will be focusing on the fundamentals of paddle sports and building your skills to successfully negotiate your way down grade 1/2 white water rapids with confidence.

Throughout these sessions our coaches will work with you to hone your existing skills and introduce you to white water specific paddling techniques to help you towards your paddling goals.

Prerequisites

We recommend being competent on flat water at a 2 star/explore award standard.

River Skills – Canoe

Come and join our introduction to river skills if you want to introduce your flat water canoe skills and develop them in a natural river environment. We will tailor the course to help achieve your personal goals and develop your skills in the following areas:

The course can be held at different locations all over the UK.

  • Confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water (doing it in a big boat counts we can teach the little boat tweaks)
  • Confident swimming in normal paddling clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • Solid roll (at least 3 out of 5 attempts is a good goal)
  • Professional delivery by our coaching team
  • AALA licensed activities (license for working with under 18’s in adventurous activities)

Sandstone Classic Climbs

Who is it for?

Being based in the South East of England can mean that we spend a lot of our time climbing at indoor gyms, which is perfect for training, but what are we really training for?

To get outside of course!

We are lucky enough to have some of the best Sandstone crags in the UK just around the corner. We have Harrisons Rocks, Stone Farm and High Rocks, to name just a few, all in Surrey and Sussex. Our aim is to give everyone the opportunity to experience our incredible local crags safely and to grow the outdoor climbing community.

What this course is all about

  • This course will be bespokely designed around your ability level and climbing experience.
  • Specific crags and routes can be identified and used to tailor our session plans around your development.
  • We will use our knowledge and experience to guide you through some of the most renowned sandstone climbs in the South East.
  • We can work closely and coach your climbing skills and techniques.

What you need to bring

  • A sensible pair of closed toe trainers, which need to be firmly attached to your feet, either by laces or velcro. If you have your own climbing shoes that would be ideal
  • Something to drink
  • Packed lunch/snacks – it’s hungry work!
  • Weather appropriate clothes:
      1. If it’s sunny, please bring sun cream as we will be outside all day. Also bring a top that covers your shoulders
      2. If it’s cold, please bring warm layers and a waterproof jacket as we will be exposed to the weather for the day

We will be providing all climbing equipment/PPE including; harnesses, helmets, ropes, belay devices, anchors etc., so you do not need to any specialist equipment.

If you have your own equipment please feel free to bring it with you. All personal equipment will be inspected by our instructors prior to the course and we reserve the right to refuse it’s use if we deem it to be unsafe/not fit for purpose.

Minimum age is 8 – If there is a member of your group who is under this age, please send us a message via our enquiry page as we may be able to make exceptions.

Course Variations

This can either be a 1 or 2 day course. We can travel to various different crags depending on what you’re looking for.

Our prices start from £70 per person / day (based on 1:4) and £165 for one-to-one coaching.

Devon Classic Climbs

Who is it for?

Climbers have become a little bit of an indoor breed in recent years and our goal is to bring us back outside to enjoy some great rock faces in the South West.

There are incredible climbing crags located all across Devon so whether we’re down on the South coast, in the middle of Dartmoor or based on the North coast, we’ll never be short of great routes.
