We teach you the best techniques to navigate the rapids safely and confidently and help you master the loop to take your skills to the next level.

The advanced group is limited to only four participants, so you can be sure to receive personalized attention and coaching. Our team will work closely with you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide you with the most effective feedback to improve your skills.

Each day, the spaces will be available to anyone unless a private group has made a booking.

Freestyle Coach

If you’re looking to coach Freestyle, this two-day training focuses on how to coach the technical and tactical skills for Freestyle paddlers. The course will help you plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and you’ll explore the specifics to help you coach some typical learners and athletes relevant to you and Freestyle.

This Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline-specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline. The course will cover the content delivered in your core training but out in the discipline-specific environment.

This course will have elements of classroom contact with 80% of the course being water-based.

The syllabus is based on the knowledge, understanding and skills that the coaches need to ensure the athletes/learners in their care are appropriately provided for. This includes:

  • assessing athlete/learner performance and needs
  • designing and delivering progressive practise/training sessions to meet these needs
  • managing safety
  • creating an enjoyable motivating learning environment
  • skills to support your own personal learning and professional development

Course Layout

Day 1: You, your peers and the provider will be out playing with ideas and theories while getting to grips with the environments in the eyes of a freestyle coach. This day is all about giving it all a go.

Day 2: We will have real students arrive for you to give it all a go! A great way to try new ideas and concepts with the ongoing development of a training course happening.

Prerequisites

  • National Association membership
  • British Canoeing Core Coach Training
  • 17 years or older

Recommended Equipment

  • Freestyle Craft (If water-based)
  • Personal Paddling Equipment
  • Any safety equipment you would carry on the water
  • Lunch and water
  • note pad and pen

To become a Freestyle Coach, you will need to successfully complete a one day, mainly practical assessment. This will include assessment of your practical coaching and safety and rescue skills; supplemented with professional discussion and questioning.

  • Core Coach Training

  • Coach Award eLearning
  • Assessment Check In

Evidence of minimum standards of deployment:

  • Valid 2 day First Aid Training
  • Safeguarding Training
  • Full Home Nation Association Membership
  • Aged 16 or over at the time of assessment

Freestyle kayaking is at the heart of Rock The Boat Activities, not only for the diversity it offers, but also the social, physical and travel opportunities it brings.

The ‘Rockstars’ programme is our monthly clinic, delivered by well known and experienced coaches who not only teach but also compete or hold sponsored roles as paddlers.

This program is designed for you to access the long term, supportive coaching you need to help you reach your goals in freestyle kayaking. Along the way you will learn about new venues, water hydrology, that next move as well as meet like minded paddlers, building your own community of freestylers.

Fun and progressive coaching

Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to participate in this training course, candidates should be:

  • Confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water (doing it in a big boat counts we can teach the little boat tweaks)
  • Confident swimming in normal paddling clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • Solid roll (at least 3 out of 5 attempts is a good goal)
  • Professional delivery by our coaching team
  • AALA licensed activities (license for working with under 18’s in adventurous activities)
  • Long term coaching supporting paddlers
  • Social interaction with other developing freestyle paddlers
  • Personal paddling equipment, including:
    • Boat
    • Paddle
    • Buoyancy-Aid
    • Helmet
    • Spray-Deck
    • Dry Gear
    • Shoes
  • Dry clothes and shoes for off the water
